Hollywood is in shock tonight.
Legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner, the man behind some of the most beloved films in American cinema, has been found dead alongside his wife Michele Singer Reiner at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Reiner was 78. Michele was 68.
What began as a routine emergency call has now become one of the most disturbing tragedies to hit Hollywood in decades. Los Angeles Fire Department officials were called to the Reiners’ home on Chadbourne Avenue on Sunday afternoon after reports of two unresponsive adults. Inside, first responders found the bodies of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. Police later confirmed the deaths were being investigated as a double homicide.
According to law-enforcement sources, both victims suffered stab wounds. There were no signs of forced entry into the house — a detail that immediately raised alarm among investigators. Within hours, the case took a shocking turn. The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Sunday night and booked on suspicion of murder. Los Angeles police say he is currently being held without bail, and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney.

No formal charges have yet been filed, and police have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. Family friends told investigators that Nick had been in and out of the family home in recent weeks and had struggled for years with mental health and substance-abuse issues. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as detectives continue to gather evidence.
To understand the scale of this loss, you have to understand who Rob Reiner was. Born into entertainment royalty as the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob first became a household name in the 1970s playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family. But instead of staying in front of the camera, Reiner reinvented himself behind it — and changed Hollywood forever.
In a remarkable run during the 1980s and 1990s, Reiner directed:
This Is Spinal Tap
Stand by Me
The Princess Bride
When Harry Met Sally…
Misery
A Few Good Men
